The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on Thursday, updated that only 2% of the people living in the United States, constituting about 7 million Americans, were currently living in counties where COVID-19 cases were still high and universal indoor masking was still being recommended.

About 73% of the Americans lived in counties with low community infection levels and no masking was recommended. The rest 21% inhabited medium community level counties, where the agency recommended that immunocompromised individuals and those at high risk for severe disease take extra precautions. Two weeks earlier, the agency had reported that around 28% of the US population inhabited in counties with high community levels of infection. (CNN, March 11, 2022)
